Universal Robots UR5e
Renamed UR7e in UR's 2026 e-Series refresh (payload 5 to 7.5 kg; 850 mm reach unchanged). Still the category volume reference and largest installed base globally. URCap ecosystem mature.
How UR5e compares within +/- 5 kg payload.
Cohort centre of gravity. 5 kg / 850 mm sits at the payload and reach combination that hosts more cobot applications than any other. Universal Robots does not publish per-model shipment figures, but the UR5e is widely treated as the category's volume model.
Why this cobot costs what it costs.
The UR5e is the cobot category's volume reference point. Its 5 kg / 850 mm specification sits at the centre of gravity for machine tending, light palletizing, pick-and-place, and assembly — between them the bulk of cobot deployments. The $30-48K distributor band looks middle-of-the-pack until you factor the URCap ecosystem: a deep catalogue of certified accessories that lets the operator ship-and-program without commissioning custom integration. That ecosystem depth is the structural cost driver — integrators bid against a large installed base, which keeps integration labour quotes competitive (typical $15-25K versus $25-40K for non-UR cells at the same payload, on our own estimates). The trade is annual service, which UR does not publish: UR Care is quoted per cell, where FANUC's 8-year maintenance-free interval on the CRX-10iA is a published number you can hold it against over a 5-year horizon. For first-cell buyers without on-staff robotics talent, the UR5e is the safest first cell — but the cost story isn't "cheap arm", it's "deep ecosystem and predictable integration spend".
Vendor-specific Bill of Materials.
These line items are what Universal Robots cells specifically need, beyond the bare arm. On our model the arm is 25-50 percent of the installed cell, a 2x to 4x multiplier, and these items are most of the difference. Costs below are our own estimates unless they name a published source.
Target buyer profile.
First-cell US/UK SMB manufacturers doing machine tending, light palletizing, or pick-and-place. The default cobot recommendation for buyers without on-staff robotics talent.
UR renamed the UR5e to UR7e in its 2026 e-Series refresh - same 850 mm reach, payload raised 5 to 7.5 kg via software. New UR7e distributor pricing runs ~4% above the old UR5e (RobotSourced: UR5e from $35K, UR7e from $38.4K); the range here still brackets both. UR does not publish list prices; corroborated by GrabaRobot + Standard Bots.
